ATARAXION EMPATHY PLOT NOTES:
Oct. 10th, 2013 08:15 pmEmotions:
At the moment, Combeferre is incredibly frustrated with the ship and almost everything on it. He has been on the Tranquility since March in real time, and he's reaching the end of the honeymoon period. He has had to deal with a lot of confusing things here and that certainly might be an issue to pick up.
Combeferre also carries some guilt for his part in the revolution. He does not feel guilty so much for having been a part of it of course, but for betraying his principles near the moment of LaMarque's death, and for some perceived failures in a number of matters:
1. not speaking up regarding his uneasiness regarding raising barricades a second time
2. his failure to trade Javert as prisoner in Jean Prouvaire's place before the other's execution
3. "Failing" to stop Enjolras or talk him down from giving Javert to Valjean at the barricades
4. His inability to do more to aid dying men at the barricades. He also helped a few along with a well placed knife but has not mentioned this to even Enjolras or Jehan, who he has been closest to since his death.
5. His inability to reach Enjolras before his death.
Shear terror and fear that overwhelms him when he needs to visit the medical bay for any reason, or be near those who need treatment, particularly due to the barricades and what occurred there.
An overwhelmingly positive emotion, to combat some of this is his love for Les Amis. They are his brothers whom he loves and would die for and who would die for him, and he has become much closer to all of them now that they have been through this experience.
There is also ovewhelming love for Enjolras, who he would love to have a romantic relationship with, though he has contented himself with being by Enjolras's side as such is not possible. He is actually reasonably well adjusted about this. Enjolras is easily the most important person in his life, regardless, and has been for quite some time. Being able to stand beside him is enough, though he does occasionally wistfully wonder what things might have been if they were different. He has no real desire to change things as they stand, however, and it is more pleasant than painful.
His love for knowledge of all types. Combeferre is very, very excited to learn new things, any new things, to discuss and debate them, and to increase his knowledge. Reading and exploring new information is one of those things that help him to be happier on Tranquility. He's been taking engineering lessons, and the theory of engineering, along with reading of history, science and philosophy fascinates and enthralls him. He has also learned to be more amused than anything else at the fact that things (including microwaves, consoles, etc) tend to blow up around him.
There is also an element of protection towards his friends, and those he cares about. He definitely feels as if he ought to do this job and can go overboard in his attempts.
Specific Memories:
-Meetings with Les Amis in the cafes of Paris, working and planning for a new French republic
-The July Revolution of 1830, in which the people of France did overthrow one king but had their revolution stolen when a constitutional monarchy was imposed in place of absolute monarchy and was really little better.
-Treating the poor, and watching many of them die as a medical student.
-The cholera epidemic of 1832 in which tensions rose, the poor suffered and died, and Combeferre, then an intern at Necker hospital would have seen the worst of it.
-The death of General LaMarque.
-Watching Enjolras kill a man who had murdered a civilian at their barricade, the death of Bahorel, Losing Jehan, and then hearing Jehan's death at the hands of the National Guard.
-Losing men who he was treating at the barricades where he acted as a medic, and helping others to die when they were too badly wounded to survive.
-Watching as many of his friends (also Gavroche and Eponine) were killed and trying to reach Enjolras.
-His death by bayonet wound, acquired while he helped a young soldier to safety even at the barricades.
